Hello Everyone,

I am a brand newbie to blogging so please forgive me if I don’t use the politically correct blog lingo.  I am currently a online PhD student, totally uncharted territory for me.  I figured if I can take on this enormous challenge, blogging should be a breeze.

My objective for blogging is to possibly connect with someone, anyone out there who has “walked in PhD shoes.” This is not an easy task and I think sharing my journey will be therapeutic as well as, a stress reliever. I began my Online PhD program on June 7, 2010, which consist of 2 classes per quarter (3 m0nth periods) and completed it on August 29, 2010. I carried away my first PhD A (Foundations of Doctoral Studies) and B (Ethics and Social Justice), consecutively.  I also carried away with these two grades muscle spasms in my shoulders, neck, upper back and middle back!  Didn’t see that coming.

By the way, did I mention that I work a full time job, at a juvenile detention facility.  Can you visualize where my stress began its evolution? I began my second quarter on September 7, 2010 and it will end on November 29, 2010.  This is my first Doctoral Research Class and it is kicking my butt! I will attend my first Residency on October 13-17, 2010. You are required to attend 4 residencies during your tenure in the PhD program.  The residencies assist you with the  Dissertation  process.  I thought…Dissertation, sounds like a dessert to me…scary huh?  I though all I had to do was course work, writing papers, completing homework assignments, etc.  I have to write a book! A mini Scientific Book!

Having said all that…I know there is a writer out there willing to help me on my journey.  Hopefully, I can dedicate my first publication to you?

Signed, Future Dr. (PhD)

    Hello Future Doc!
I am a former doctoral student who actually completed my dissertation & rec’d my PhD. It took quite a while & I didn’t work full time while doing it. So make a long term plan, always knowing that you WILL finish, it’s only a question of when. You already sound like you’ve begun to do that.

I’d be happy to answer any of your questions, so shoot them my way. Good luck!
    Monica

    Hello Monica,

Thank you for your offer and I may take you up on the offer {:-). Please forgive me for the late response, been busy writing papers for my FIRST Research Class using John W. Creswell’s RESEARCH DESIGN Text book on Qualitative, Quantitative and Mixed Methods Approaches. Did you use this text book during your research classes? I am doing fairly well so far. Actually, my professor in this class asked if she could use portions of my recent papers as examples for the students who are struggling with their papers. I was honored to say the least. I thought I was struggling, but I guess I am doing well {:-)…except for the awful pain in the back of my shoulders and neck. I am thinking it is stress from working full-time and school full-time. Monica, did you receive your PhD online or in-class? My PhD program is Public Policy and Administration. Look forward to your response. Have a great Sunday!

    Dear Future Dr.,
Look at first paragraph; second sentence “am currently a online PhD student” the” a” after currently should be “an” because it comes before a vowel. I am surprised that your grammar checker did noth pit that up. Little habits or slight memory lapses can become the difference in an “A” grade and a ” B” paper. Good luck, I am an “ABD” PH. D. I found a position outside of academia which paid me twice what a new
Ph.D would make in their first years. Best wishes for you.
    Sam
