What inspires you?

I collect books: history, poetry and writing books, paper back, hard cover, old, and those I cannot bear to part with. I can run my hand over the book spines and remember exactly what is printed inside. I also remember when and where I was when I first picked up the book. Or in the case of Natalie Goldberg’s Wild Mind, I remember when I spilled red wine on the book and how devastated I was at the time, but I never replaced it. I keep the ragged, wine stained book on my shelf and thumb through it regularly, the wine stain is part of its history, something new just won’t do.

I also collect favorite moments from films, some snippets on my phone, some I find on You Tube and book mark and some are played in full over and over (Princess Diaries, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, the Mummy, anything featuring Pierce Brosnan). I keep a running list of favorite quotes and    collection of favorite poems.  I gather up images that resonate and keep them in an altered book I created one weekend.  What is the point of all this collecting?  When I run dry, when I can’t think of anything to say, these are what I turn to for inspiration. guaranteed.
What is your collection?  What do you keep around that will inspire? Do you have one?  Consider collecting up cool interesting things, much like the childhood collections we kept in special boxes, they will help you when you feel your creativity has run dry.
