I was driving to meet with a client this morning, and I realized that I had something pertinent to say to everyone here at Newbie Writers.
I’m in the process of changing my career path, and that is something that can change your fundamental perception of yourself. I’ve also run into this same set of assumptions and perceptions as a writer. That’s what I want to share with you. Here we go!
Do you feel like writing isn’t something all that special?
You might be surprised to know that not everyone can write a book, a stirring poem, or a rollicking-good story. Not many people who dream of it ever do it. If they did, we would be awash in paperbacks, petabyte storage for ebooks (at home). By virtue of the fact you’re doing something that many people can’t or won’t, you are extraordinary. Taking the leap of faith required to publish your material is equally extraordinary, as well as incredibly brave.
Face it, friends, you’re not as mundane as you think you are.
To do what we do, there are qualities you must have… qualities that aren’t in abundance in most of the population. Here’s a short list:
By pursuing this craft, you become part of the history of storytellers that stretches back to when the cave paintings in France were still wet. You are among shaman, myth-makers, the enlightened, and the insane. This is the truth.
False modesty becomes us as well as an over-inflated ego. Know and accept the truth that what you do is special. You don’t have to be an ass about it, but I suggest you allow yourself to be honest. You are special. You are not mundane. You are capable of amazing things.
You don’t have to change the world (unless you want to). Just do what you do, and do it well.
