New Website Design!

Okay,

So I was pretty tired of the old site. I’ve tried new themes in the past but none of them seem to be “right.” This one has taken a lot of work to get it to fit as most themes for wordpress seem to be focused towards photography or plain boring news sites. Oh that and e-commerce.

So, there’s still a lot to do, there’s a few bugs but there is only so much I can do by conning WordPress into believing it has a under construction page. 😉

Well there are a few different things as you’ll see by the menu on the top. Firstly, the podcast and blog is what this site has evolved into. Therefore, I will be closing down the forums. They have slowly dwindled into a ghost town. I am in two minds about adding a “forum archive” or just not making mention of it. Sure it has 6 years worth of content, but this being the internet, that content could now be deemed as stagnant. For those that do occasionally post, you are welcome to comment on the blog. If you feel the urge to post more frequently, I can set you up with a log in for the blog to make your posts.

So the new headings. Videos? You say… Well Catharine has a number of videos floating about, not to mention her upcoming site/project: Potato Girls (I’d link to it but it’s still got the covers on it). I would like to encourage people to email the link to their Book Trailer. Book Trailers are becoming more and more popular, so why not showcase some of our communities book trailers?

*Cough* Yes there is a section for my videos. Keep it clean people… For those that listen to the podcast I have been tempted to record some audio children’s books and post them on youtube. Having that sub heading there hopefully will force me to do so!

Advertising. This has been something I have mulled over for a long time. Newbie Writers is free and always will be, but it does take money, time and effort to make everything work. (Yawn yeah yeah). I hate ads. I’ll be blunt about that. It puts me off a website and nauseates me. So here’s the idea (thanks to The Morning Stream who do this well: http://www.frogpants.com/tms), if you’d like to sponsor a segment during the podcast, be it Word of The Week, The Prompt, Tortured Sentences, then you can! We’ll read out your ad and say thanks for support! Thinking of doing it for a measley $5. If you’d like to sponsor the whole show email me: podcast@newbiewriters.com

I am still working on that idea so stay tuned.

Catharine is looking to do a Master Class in the new year. Stay tuned for that, it will become another menu heading in the future.

I would love your feedback on the changes. If you have a suggestion, or something you’d like to include drop me a line. Don’t be shy! You can say it’s terrible… just let me know WHY! Any bugs or errors you find, please email: podcast@newbiewriters.com ASAP.

Thanks everyone for your patience during the downtime. I can sleep somewhat now…

Looking good, Damien. Sad to see the forum go after all these years, but totally understandable. I haven’t logged in myself for ages. Nice touch!

I love the new design – clean lines, lots of good open space, etc. One suggestion – you might want to spell out the email addresses instead of posting them directly because that can lead to spam (even if they aren’t hyperlinked). For instance, instead of podcast@newbiewriters.com, write it as podcast [at] newbiewriters [dot com] or something along those lines. Us humans (most of us anyway) can interpret and translate that and it should fool most robots that are harvesting email addresses just so they can spam you.

Not that it looks like you need help, but I’ve done a good amount of WP based website for design clients – if you get stuck on something, drop me a line and I might be able to assist. Thanks for creating such a great resource!

Thanks for the responses. It was late last night and I think I broke something as I kept getting white screens when I’d do stuff! But all seems to be back in order. Send me your book trailers etc!

Its like you read my mind! You appear to know a lot about this,
like you wrote the book in it or something. I think that you
can do with a few pics to drive the message home a bit, but instead of that,
this is excellent blog. A fantastic read.
    I’ll definitely be back.

** And hopefully without spam links. But thanks for the nice comment!**
