Send the girls

Why send the girls back to the past? Why not intrepid boys? I have nothing against boys. I love boys, made a few myself. But in Future Girls, the boys have already been sucked into the Reality Cloud. They spend hours, days and weeks cocooned inside the Internet which has grown like Moore’s Law into an all encompassing second life. Men work exclusively within the Reality Cloud, they play, conduct business and fight wars all through virtual reality programs that are real enough to completely engage the players.   Of course they have virtual sex as well. If the fantasy world, where everything is accessible and nothing is forbidden is your daily experience – 10, 12 hours a day. What do you care about a real house, real food, the real world? It wouldn’t hold many charms. Sure the men need to procreate, that’s why they still need women. But the society has fallen into bad habits, keeping the women repressed and in charge of little more than the increasing dwindling resources.   Since the women are the ones bearing the brunt of the dwindling resources, they are the ones determined to find a way to change things.

It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.

–Albert Einstein

Another reason the girls are a better fit for time travel, besides strong motivation, is they are good at reading social cues. Particularly if they read old books. These future girls initially have some basic knowledge of the past culled from the few novels they get hold of (and share).   A novel will deliver more pertinent information about a time period than a history program on the Cloud. And of course if all your information is delivered electronically, then it can be controlled, edited. If they depended on the Reality Cloud for their information, the women would only know what the men in charge of controlling the Cloud, want them to know. And the women are much smarter than that.

So back to social cues. When the girls are tossed back in time, their job is to fit in, to listen to the language and mimic it, to not give away the game as they seek out what they need to change to make their own future better. Girls will find a way to dress like everyone else, walk like everyone else, fix their hair not so they are a carbon copy but so they fit in more naturally. Girls care, that is their strength. Future Girls are not the Terminator, they want to be part of the scene, talk to people, find out what it is they can do. And do it quietly and effectively.
